One day long ago, a mother with her son came to pick up one of our animators at our studio. This little boy must have been two or even younger. There was music playing and the little guy, who could barely walk, started to dance. Too cute! So this inspired this song. The little grunts we hear belong to the real baby.

Mouse Soup (1992)

A mouse is captured by a weasel who wants to make soup out of him. The clever mouse tells four stories that trick the weasel into releasing him. Each of the mouse's stories features a different song.

Buddy Hackett plays Mouse, Will Ryan plays Weasel, additional voices by Pat Musick and Hal Rayle. What luck to have such great talent on this show!

A funny little song about a mouse that gets into trouble with some bees. Will Ryan is the singing mouse, Buddy Hackett is the mouse in the pot. Michael Parks animated the entire sequence.

 

Feeling Good

This stop-motion film is based on the book, "Mouse Soup" written by Arnold Lobel. Will Ryan plays Weasle, Buddy Hackett plays Mouse, additional voices by Pat Musick and Hal Rayle. I created the cell animation, wrote the songs and screenplay. I also directed and produced this show. “Feeling Good” was performed by the Hi-Lo’s. My wife, Niki Matthews did all of the stop-motion animation alone. I created the cell animation.

 

The Stones Story

Two stones sitting on a hill wonder what's on the other side. Is "not knowing" better than "knowing"? This story has a Zen type message. Will Ryan is the stone on the right. Hal Rayle is the stone on the left. Pat Musick is the bird. Michael Parks animated the entire scene alone.

 

Got A Boo-boo

One night a cricket was out singing. A woman mouse can’t sleep because of the noise. There is some confusion and the cricket thinks she wants more music (and even more music). Hal Rayle is the cricket, Pat Musick is the mouse. My wife, Niki Matthews, animated the entire scene alone.

 

Stanley and the Dinosaurs (1989)

This is one of my early stop-motion videos. I wrote the songs “I Wonder Why” and “Wake-up, Stop Your Sleeping”. Will Ryan sang all four parts for the singing dinosaurs (as well as additional lyrics). He and Jim Cummings also did voices for the cavemen. Of all my old stop-motion shows, this is one of my favorites.

 

Mouse and the Motorcycle (1987)

Ralph the Mouse finds a new friend named Keith who owns a beautiful toy motorcycle and ambulance. The little boy becomes sick and Ralph goes on a dangerous mission to save him.

Ralph the Mouse runs away from home so Mat can keep his job. He ends up at the Happy Acres Summer Camp where he meets Garth (Fred Savage). Based on the book by Beverly Cleary.

 

Ralph S. Mouse (1990)

This is the third Mouse and the Motorcycle film I produced for ABC. I also was the voice of Ralph, Director of Animation and the Production Designer. Based upon the novel by Beverly Cleary featuring Robert Oliveri, Britt Leach, Karen Black and Ray Walston. Tom Smith was the director.

 

Uncle Elephant (1991)

Arnie, a child elephant, loses his parents. An old uncle soon arrives and tries to takeover being his parent. Grief is hard to overcome, but the wisdom and humor of Uncle Elephant wins over Arnie.

 

Count To Ten

Arnie, a child elephant has lost his parents. His uncle (his guardian) takes him to his home on a train. Uncle tries to revive Arnie's spirits with a funny song. It works.

 

Frog and Toad Are Friends (1985)

This stop-motion film features four stories from the book, "Frog and Toad Are Friends”. Will Ryan is the voice of Frog; Hal Smith is the voice of Toad. The author, Arnold Lobel, narrates. I produced, directed and did the production design. I also wrote the musical themes.

 

The Letter

Toad is sad, he never gets any mail. Frog tries to help by writing him a letter. Like most good deeds, there ends up being a problem. Will Ryan is Frog, Hal Smith is Toad.

Frog is feeling poorly so he goes to bed. He asks Toad to tell him a story. This simple request becomes a big task. The author, Arnold Lobel, narrates.

This stop-motion film features four stories from the book, "Frog and Toad Together". Will Ryan is Frog; Hal Smith is Toad. I produced and directed this film. I also created the production design. Steven Mark Kohn created the music.

 

The Garden

Frog's garden has inspired Toad to plant some seeds. He expects them to grow instantly and when they don't, he tries reading and singing to help his "frightened" seeds grow. Hal Smith is Toad, Will Ryan is Frog.

 

Cookies

Toad made a batch of very delicious cookies. He and Frog can not stop eating them. They decide to use "Will Power" to help themselves behave. This has mixed results. Will Ryan is Frog, Hal Smith is Toad.

Pocahontas - The Girl Who Lived In Two Worlds (1995)

Pat Musick is Pocahontas’ sister, Christina Schillinger is young Pocahontas, Vickie Bottleson is the adult Pocahontas. Hal Rayle contributes various character voices.

 

Oh Sun

While writing the screenplay for this version of Pocahontas, I did a lot of research and tried to make it more historically accurate. The true story of Pocahontas is very interesting. Pat Musick is Pocahontas’ sister, Christina Schillinger is young Pocahontas.

 

Morris Has A Cold (1993)

Morris the Moose gets a cold, His best friend, Boris (a bear), teaches him how to take care of himself. Will Ryan is Morris, Hal Smith is Boris, Pat Musick is Rita (a raccoon).

 

Morris Goes To School (1989)

Morris (a moose) decides to go to school so he can learn how to count and read. He is a big hit with the children there. His takeaway from his experience there: "He never knew how much he didn't know." Will Ryan is Morris.

 

It’s My Lucky Day

Morris, a good-natured moose, sings "It's My Lucky Day". Will Ryan is the voice for Morris. I wrote the song.

 

Feed Your Brain

A funny little song Morris learns at school. It was inspired by my youngest son asking why he had to go to school. My answer was, "to feed your brain". Will Ryan is the voice of Morris and he also helped with additional lyrics.

 

Curious George (1984)

The Man With The Yellow Hat finds George in a jungle in Africa. He brings the little monkey home with him which leads to a few adventures. This was my second stop-motion film I produced and directed.

 

Curious George Goes to the Hospital (1982)

Entire Video

George is curious and accidentally eats a puzzle piece. He has to go to the hospital for a minor operation. This film deals with a child's fears involved with medical procedures and being left alone at a hospital.

 

Commander Toad In Space (1993)

Commander Toad and his crew have to deliver the Royal Phisbin (?!) or the the Universe will be in dire trouble. As always, the trip is more important than the destination - least it's more fun. I wish I could have filmed the making of this film; the Henson Puppeteers were hilarious!

THE PLOW

During the blizzard of 2023 we received over 9' of snow in Lake Arrowhead, California. The roads were impassible; our road didn't get plowed for almost a week. When the plow did come it was time for a celebration.

 

Niki In the Snow Dunes

The blizzard of 2023 has left us in very deep snow. My wife, Niki, is returning from checking on her chickens. Our Ring security camera caught this strange sight.  Those big piles of snow don't have cars buried under them.

 

The Dream

One night I had a very strange dream . . .I was really there in a magic forest:  A white wolf chased a rascally raven in the foggy moonlight.  I could hear their playful thoughts.  A little frog played a tiny banjo, singing a doo-bee-doo diddly song.  Everywhere I looked, curious whimsy.  I was surprised and confused by it all.  Then a tree spoke to me with a shaky old voice:

“Everything has meaning if you can find it.”

 

Jurupa (1998)

When I first started working a Sony Pictures Imageworks, I was determined to learn CGI techniques as quickly as possible. In this animated short I did the production design, modeling, lighting, animation, music, voice-over and screenplay - I actually did everything you see and hear. This was a very good learning experience - and it got me promoted to Lead Animator.

 

Bikini Lady

Based on a true story: I was walking on the Venice Beach boardwalk when I saw a beautiful, young woman lying in the hot sand. Her bikini was so skimpy that I honestly thought she was completely naked.

I performed the vocals and instrumentals. I also created the video art and animation. "Bikini Lady" is a song from my album, "Dream of Flying and Dying."

Classical jazz variations on an old rhyme.

Late one night I discovered a mouse living in my piano. At first I was angry and started pounding the keys hoping the noise would scare it away. Nope. Then I laughed thinking, “this mouse probably likes music“. So I wrote this piece for her. Hope she likes it.
